Chapter 15

Why Didn’t You Save Him?

The pocket dimension

I sat in the valley where the cabin was and called for Shroding.

He settled down in the grass next to me, the mountains cresting up infront of us. Before I could question him, mostly to ask how he was feeling and grill him as to why he hadn’t told me he was injured, he spoke.

“I know there are a lot of things you want to know about me and everything we are facing.” He hedged, “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I have some questions about you too.”

“Oh?”Absently, I picked a leaf off the ground and rolled it between my fingers. “Like what?”

“Your family, your friends… those kids on the farm everyday.”

I glanced at him, which was a mistake. His eyes flickered iridescent, and my cheeks flushed as I recalled the night he had carried me out of the barn in the other dimension. The otherworldly glow around him had seemed so fanciful then. Now I knew that was just who he was, a magnet to the light. I was a girl floundering around in the dark, shrouded by night, but he was the sky full of stars, helping me find my way. “What specifically do you want to know?”

“Your mother, what is she like?” he asked, and I couldn’t help but wonder if his asking was because he’d lacked the presence of his own mother growing up. I imagined Queen Elina would have been a wonderful mother, loving, attentive, and even with her prophecy telling of the power her son would have, I bet it wouldn’t have mattered one bit to her.

“She looks like me, but her hair is shorter and her face is covered in freckles, making her seem young. Anytime we were in town together, visiting vendors, they would always tease us, saying we looked more like sisters.” I grinned at the memory. “Everyone loves her, she is hard working, and somehow even when my father was away for business, she always kept the plates spinning. Never letting the farm fall behind. She is my hero in more ways than one.” I sighed, an ache in my chest yawning open. I missed her so much. I wrapped my arms around myself, hugging tightly. My long hair tumbled over my shoulder, and I shrugged it back with a tilt of my head. “I was notorious for getting things caught in my hair.” I chuckled without humor. “On the day she left, it had gotten caught on the button of her coat sleeve.” I swallowed thickly.

“She sounds incredibly strong.” Shroding gave a comforting smile. “You take after her in more than looks.”

I waved away the compliment. I hadn’t been able to do half of what she could do. I had more than failed the farm; I’d let it burn.

Shroding placed a hand on my shoulder, clearing his throat. “What is her name, you didn’t say?”

“Jean Golden, and then there is Theo. We are practically twins,” I added, the smile that had been forming falling just as quickly into a frown.
